“HAIR”

Call for submissions!

Political, personal, spiritual,
Too much, too little, in the wrong places, in all directions…
Big, curly, none, grey, pin straight…
Cover it, show it off, cut it down, tame it…
Afro’s to head covers to cancer recovery.

Unkempt, untamed, wild, wrong, luscious to lissotrichous, our relationship to hair is complex, cultural, political, triggering, traumatizing, empowering, and revolutionary.

In Iranian culture, hair is meant to be covered for fear of driving men crazy, but in reality, is used as an oppressive tool of the regime. Black hairstyles are being appropriated while the very hair is banned in work or school spaces. Head covers are being banned from educational institutions and workspaces in France denying many Muslim women the right to an education and the right to work. The Bearded Woman was a freak in the circus while Frida Kahlo’s unibrow is an icon of creativity and feminism. The horrors and healing of our relationship with hair are ongoing and complex. Our relationship to our hair is just that: ours. And this publication seeks to remind us that no one tells us otherwise.
